Discussion

Tom in London (asker) Apr 23, 2017:
Correct There was never any suggestion that the adjective "nettarine" is a noun.
philgoddard Apr 23, 2017:
It's about Expo 2015, right? Maybe your text is different, but I found one containing an almost identical sentence.
As I said, nettarine doesn't mean nectarines.
Tom in London (asker) Apr 23, 2017:
Favorite Where does my text say that the nectarine species were favoured by the designers?
philgoddard Apr 23, 2017:
You're not being very helpful, Tom! Never mind, I've found the context myself - it's about planting a butterfly garden, and "favorite" means favoured by the designers.
Nettarine means nectar-containing.
mrrafe Apr 23, 2017:
If they're insects, nectarines and larval food plants makes sense. But if they're birds, etc., they might not gravitate toward larva food and therefore the plants are nutritious for someone but not necessarily larvae. And nobody doesn't like nectarines. I'll presume they're insects and TexJax is correct, but it's not clear from the context.
Tom in London (asker) Apr 23, 2017:
Favoured Favoured by those who were in a position to favour them.
philgoddard Apr 23, 2017:
Yes, but by who or what?
Tom in London (asker) Apr 23, 2017:
Favorite = "favoured"
philgoddard Apr 23, 2017:
Tom What is the context, and what does "favorite" mean?
Tom in London (asker) Apr 23, 2017:
Surely.. Shouldn't that be "nutriche" anyway? But what does the adjective mean? It may have something to do with bees/butterflies. Possibly a genus of flowering grasses that are attractive to insects.

larval food plants

Si definisce pianta nutrice la pianta su cui un insetto depone le proprie uova e a spese della quale successivamente si nutrono le larve.
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pianta_nutrice

Adult females normally lay their eggs on or near specific food plants (which often have to be abundant enough).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larval_food_plants_of_Lepidopt...

Habitat: Wooded hillsides with plenty of Strawberry Trees, Arbutus unedo, the larval food plant.
Infatti vive in un solo ambiente, tipico delle nostre latitudini: la macchia mediterranea, che accoglie fra le diverse essenze che la compongono la sua unica pianta nutrice, il coloratissimo corbezzolo (Arbutus unedo).

Yes, Tex- I thought it must be something like that but I'm looking for a snappy one-word solution....
