¿Qué entendemos por calado de la distribución?
Es sincronizar el giro del cigüeñal con el giro del árbol de levas.
¿Para qué?
Para que el ciclo de funcionamiento del motor se realice correctamente, es decir que se cumpla el diagrama de la distribución, que abran y cierren las válvulas de admisión y escape en el momento adecuado y obtener el mayor rendimiento posible del motor.

The first paragraph:

Poner a Punto un Sistema de Distribución consiste en acoplar el Árbol de Levas con el Cigüeñal, de manera que las aperturas y cierres de las Válvulas se produzcan en los momentos adecuados, cumpliendo el Diagrama de Distribución del motor, con relación a la posición del Pistón en el interior del Cilindro. Por lo general, los Piñones del Árbol de Levas y del Cigüeñal están provistos de las Marcas de Referencia correspondientes, así como la Cadena o Correa de Distribución, que bastará con hacer coincidir para efectuar el acoplamiento. A esta operación se la denomina Calado o Puesta a Punto de la Distribución.

Valve timing is controlled by making sure the camshaft and crankshaft are positioned correctly to each other. If the cam is ahead of or behind where it should be, bad things can happen, as simple as poor running, to as bad as severe engine damage from valves and pistons colliding. The gears, belt, or chain that links the cam to the crank has to be correct.
