French term

équipements matériels lourds

French to English Medical Medical (general) Radiology
I am translating a paper on interventional radiology.

Concernant l’évaluation médico-administrative, il (interventional radiology) s’agit d’une technique médicale mettant en jeu un dispositif médical, l’appareil de radiologie, qui par ailleurs présente la particularité d’être considéré comme  *équipement matériel lourd*.
'équipements matériels lourds' seems to be a category of medical equipment covered by the French public health code, MRI equipment etc - is this just 'heavy hardware'?

Thanks everyone for your help. In the end I used 'installations' which seems to be used in connection with radiology equipment. Tony if you wanted to post that I could give you the points.
Tony M Jun 27, 2017:
@ Asker Do bar in mind that 'équipements' in the plural is often not best translated by 'equipment' (cf. clash with 'matériel) — I think in this instance, you might find it better to start off along the lines of 'facilities' or 'installations' — the types of equipment you describe are by an large fixed, installed equipment, rather than 'portable' or 'mobile', and I think that is the specific distinction that is being made here in FR. I don't really think this is quite analagous with the 'heavy plant' used in construction, for example — a bulldozer, grader, etc.

installations / installed facilities

Needs to be handled carefull depending on exact surrounding context.

Note that 'équipements' in the plural often is closer to 'installations', 'facilities', 'plant', etc. than to actual 'items of equipment'.

It is necessary to udnerstand that there are sometimes different ways of expressing things between FR and EN, and a slavish word-for-word translation is often not satisfactory; sense of 'lourd' here is simply 'something installed, can't be carried around'

heavy equipment

In US EN, heavy equipment is a common phrase. It usually describes transportation and construction or earth moving vehicles, but occasionally describes radiology equipment although that usage is not a standardized term as in the case of motor vehicles.

The design of these facilities can be adjusted to meet your specific requirements but often incorporate relevant magnetic shielding, radiation protection, RF enclosures, pressure equalisation, oxygen monitoring systems and robust concrete floors to accommodate heavy equipment eliminating vibration.
