German term
etwas ihm Gemäßes und Zustehendes
German to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
A man becomes unexpectedly successful in his career although his ability does not go in line with the task he is assigned. But he tries to defer to it.
"Er fügte sich in all das. Er nahm es für bare Münze, als etwas ihm Gemäßes und Zustehendes, weit entfernt von irgendeinem Zufall oder einer Übertreibung"
He tries to take everything serious as something that is compliant and eligible for him and far away from coincidence or an exaggeration?
Cannot make sense out of so many modifiers. Please help meeee

as something he had achieved and deserved

or: as something he had been equal to and merited/deserved

there are many ways to do this, so let's see what else comes up

--------------------------------------------------
"equal to" in the sense of "he wasn't sure if he could do it, but he did" ... I think that gets the gist
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 17 mins (2017-07-16 18:30:05 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
and I definitely prefer "deserved" to "merited"
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 30 mins (2017-07-16 18:43:28 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
the "Gemäß" element is the tricky part here
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 34 mins (2017-07-16 18:47:10 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
we have to see it in the overall context and it overlaps a bit with the "Zustehend" so I think you could solve it bz sazing something like: "something he was equal to and deserved"
--------------------------------------------------

and sorry about the "z" that should be "y" (was on German keyboard)

Note added at 2 hrs (2017-07-16 20:18:27 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
we really have to take the idea of the insufficient feeling that he thought he didn't deserve it to get the right rendering here
--------------------------------------------------
Note added at 2 hrs (2017-07-16 20:43:31 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
will stick with "been equal to" as I think it catches the nuance

he thought he wasn't up to it but he was

maybe too subtle in this format but that's what it means

Something befitting him, something he was entitled to
Das sind die Wörter, die ich am passendsten finde. Nur leider muss man damit das "something"wiederholen. Lässt sich aber trotzdem ganz gut in einen Satzrhythmus bringen, denk ich.

Thank you very much Detva. This is exactly what helped me! |

entitled and deserving
You might say, he felt that he was entitled to and deserving of it.
Entitled and deserving always seem to go hand in hand:
"Such a person feels entitled and deserving of what he is given in life."https://itunes.apple.com/ie/podcast/everyday-thanks-with-dan...
"IS the kid lazy because it feels entitled and deserving of everything because you have handed it everything it has ever wanted on a silver platter" https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130409203242A...

something fitting and due to him
There is no doubt to him that he doesn't not deserve this.

You're welcome!... "Fitting and due" are a unit, by the way. Additionally, the next line is an echo of this one, so I wouldn't introduce more redundancy if it is not necessary.
