Spanish term

casas buzones

Spanish to English Other Government / Politics Maras in El Salvador

No he podido encontrar nada con Google search.

Muchas gracias.

I've found 'stash house'.

Stash houses are houses used by crooks to hide drugs, guns, and sometimes people.

His team plans to raid two locations tonight. They’re stash houses, used to store drugs awaiting distribution through a nationwide network.

“Sheriff’s Office, search warrant,” one agent yells as he bangs on the window.

Lt. Thomas and his team take three people into custody and uncover dozens of bundles of drugs in a pickup parked outside. There are more drugs inside the stash house, along with a shrine of saints. Some are legitimate saints, like the Virgin Mary. Others, like Saint Jesus Malverde are called “narco saints.” Malverde is considered the patron saint of the illegal drug trade. Traffickers pray to him for the safe delivery of their loads.

agree Robert Carter : A "stash house" was the idea that came to mind first to me too, though I couldn't remember the phrase for the life of me!//Well, I suppose we do both live abroad!! (nothing to do with age ;-)

That happens to me all the time! I know that words and phrases exist and I remember them whenever I see or hear them, but they don't come immediately to mind! I don't know if it's due to my age or because I live abroad! Thank you, Robert :-)

dead drop [sites] / dead letter boxes

Not really sure if this is what is meant, but it seems feasible in the context of the Mara, possibly for drug drops or kidnapping.

A dead drop or dead letter box is a method of espionage tradecraft used to pass items or information between two individuals (e.g., a case officer and an agent, or two agents) using a secret location, thus not requiring them to meet directly and thereby maintaining operational security. The method stands in contrast to the live drop, so-called because two persons meet to exchange items or information.

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : I think this sounds like the closest answer, especially because they cite "casas buzones" - not the same as 'drop houses' where coyotes drop illegal immigrants.

Thanks, Muriel, but I actually think Helena's suggestion of "stash houses" is more likely in this context; what do you think? Saludos!

In the US, 'drop house' is commonly used to refer to the places where 'drop-offs' are carried out by gang members.

According to the definition below, it appears to be more specific than a 'stash house' (which are often used for drugs):

"Drop house is a halfway house where smugglers conceal undocumented aliens who are usually from Mexico and Central America. When coyotes smuggle illegal mexicans across the border, they stuff them into small apartments, called drop houses."
