médaillons

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Persian miniatures
Hello,
This is from a text about a well-know jeweller who drew inspiration from Oriental art in his creations.

In the sentence below, I do not understand the meaning of "médaillons". From what I gather, Persian miniatures often illustrated stories, and sometimes had a decorative border featuring arabesques. This same type of pattern could theoretically be found on rugs as well. Is that what the author might be referring to? Any insight much appreciated!

Archit. ➙ Médaille (→ Force, cit. 76; fouiller, cit. 8).

Medallions Hi Idna, a medallion is a decorative device in many traditions. It need not be a three-dimensional object, though it obviously refers to them. It can also be a two-dimensional representation of one - probably oval-shaped, forming part of a decorative border or as a central element of a design.
