Я перевожу текст об Эдинбургском замке. В тексте есть такое предложение:

Может быть, кто-нибудь подскажет, что в данном случае означает "step in"?

Вероятно, слово «многоярусная» не вполне удачно. Тогда попробуйте подобрать другое, представив себе поставленную на попа телескопическую конструкцию вроде складной подзорной трубы.

ступенчатый уступ
Толщина стен уменьшалась вверху ступенчатыми уступами, так можно понимать.
Такие уступы на наружных стенах видны на рисунке реконструкции башни и у стен батареи Полумесяц (Half-Moon Battery), которая была построена на остатках башни Давида.
