German term

Verlaufseinheit

German to English Medical Psychology Psychiatry
My text is about psychotic depression. It is looking, in particular, at the phenomenological approach to treating this condition andexamines the history of psychiatry in this regard. I do not know how to translate Verlaufseinheit in the following sentence:
In der Folge sind es vor allem phänomenologisch orientierte Psychiater, die den Melancholiebegriff als eigene, monopolare Verlaufseinheit aufnehmen und synonym mit endogener Depression oder depressiver Psychose verwenden

Discussion

Herbmione Granger Mar 2, 2018:
Unity (Good) translations and interpretations of Kant are also a good resource.

http://www.philosophy-dictionary.org/Kant-Dictionary/SYNTHES...
The categories are crucial to "giving unity" to the manifold of intuition after it has been acted upon by the imagination in the pure synthesis of intuitions. Namely, they give an "a priori synthetic unity" through a pure synthesis of the understanding. After the categories are thus applied, and the manifold of intuition is ordered in this "a priori synthetic unity", the manifold now meets the conditions necessary to be acted upon by the faculty of judgment.

Verlauf In natural philosophy, Verlauf can mean something like behavio(u)r.

While early phenomenology was mainly discussed in German, there is probably enough literature in English by now to give a good representation.

Access to a modern text in English, like this book chapter, would be helpful.

Referring mainly to the experiences of the patient, phenomenologicalanthropological diagnostics is shown as a supplement to a symptomatologicalcriteriological one. Since Greek Antiquity up to modern diagnostic glossaries there is the question of the structure of melancholia and mania and their interrelation.
Herbmione Granger Mar 2, 2018:
Einheit I think Unity fits better than Entity.

Phenomenology utilizes a distinctive method to study the structural features of experience and of things as experienced. It is primarily a descriptive discipline and is undertaken in a way that is largely independent of scientific, including causal, explanations and accounts of the nature of experience...
Brentano thought that all and only psychological states exhibit intentionality, and that in this way the subject matter of psychology could be demarcated. His, early and notorious, doctrine of intentional inexistence maintains that the object of an intentional state is literally a part of the state itself, and is, therefore, an "immanent" psychological entity. This position is based on Brentano's adherence to (something like) the first interpretation of the Kantian notion of phenomena mentioned above (Crane 2006)...
Kant endorsed "transcendental idealism," distinguishing between phenomena (things as they appear) and noumena (things as they are in themselves), claiming that we can only know about the former (Kant 1929, A30/B45).
Herbmione Granger Mar 1, 2018:
phenomenological I almost dislike the usage here, since phenomenology is a branch of psychology that I'm somewhat familiar with. It has nothing to do with clinical diagnoses, although it may be helpful in creating the frameworks.

"Categorically distinct" (similar to what TonyTK suggested) appears a few times in this link.

Since Anne is favoring "entity", "distinct categorical entity".

Just a couple ... ... of random thoughts:
Although it sounds like a translation, "clinical course" has quite a few hits in the context of melancholia.
Then again, might it not be appropriate to simply use "disorder" or "clinical category"?
One thing I found while Googling was that "unipolar" appears to be more common than "monopolar" in this context. I assume there's no difference in meaning.

This sentence appears purely descriptive to me, and Verlaufseinheit looks like a true chimaera that must be level with Melancholiebegriff.

An appropriate starting point is a phenomenological description of the geometric distributions or flow patterns that are observed in common multiphase flows. This chapter describes the flow patterns observed in horizontal and vertical pipes and identifies a number of the instabilities that lead to transition from one flow pattern to another...
A particular type of geometric distribution of the components is called a flow pattern or flow regime and many of the names given to these flow patterns (such as annular flow or bubbly flow) are now quite standard. Usually the flow patterns are recognized by visual inspection, though other means such as analysis of the spectral content of the unsteady pressures or the fluctuations in the volume fraction have been devised for those circumstances in which visual information is difficult to obtain

At this juncture the evidence bearing on the dysfunction between the endogenous forms of depression (or ‘melancholia’ or autonomous depression) on the one hand and neurotic forms of depression on the other requires consideration. In DSM-III-R, depressive and anxiety disorders are classified as distinct categorical entities.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/307820034_Melanchol...
Melancholia can be identified as a separate mood disorder with unique psychopathology and psychoneuroendocrinology, worthy of separate attention in the classification systems. We therefore suggest that melancholia be positioned as a distinct, identifiable mood disorder that requires specific treatment.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of existing systems for the diagnosis of the endogenous (melancholic) subtype of major depression...
The available evidence suggests some clinical utility and some (albeit not entirely consistent) validity for the concept of melancholic features. Consequently, DSM-IV will retain the designation "with melancholic features," return to the shorter DSM-III feature listing, and broaden the designation by requiring either unreactive mood or pervasive anhedonia but not both. Further research on this subgroup is indicated.

Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Anne Schulz : Yes, Kraepelin's sub-classification of what was previously considered globally as "insanity" is the basis of this term: a "disease entity" distinguished by virtue of its course. I am not sure if there is an established English translation, probably not.

Thanks very much for your peer comment, Anne! Any equivalent term in English would more probably than not have been simply transliterated.
