Hi all,

I'm translating a text about disabled access to household appliances from French (France) into English (UK).

'Ce texte définit de grands principes d’orientations pour les politiques d’accessibilité des personnes handicapées. Il prend également en compte de nombreux aspects de la vie quotidienne pour ces personnes comme pour leurs accompagnants. Toutefois, un domaine est resté à l’écart des dispositions proposées. Il s’agit de l’accessibilité des appareils électroménagers pour les personnes malvoyantes. À ce sujet, l’utilisation de plus en plus importante d’interfaces numérisées comme des micro écrans tactiles et des boutons de commandes à rotation libre rend inaccessible ces appareils à cette catégorie de la population.'

I was thinking of something along the lines of 'freely rotating control buttons', but I don't really like the sound of that. I've done some additional research, but nothing any better came up. Could anybody help please?

@ Phil Not necessairly exactly 'stepless', as many of these things have purely mechnical slight detents in order to give the control some "feel"; but they are "continuous" in the sense that you can keep on turning them, they don't have an end-stop, as "conventional" controls used to have, usually about 270° operation; so even without sight, you could fiigure out roughly where the control was positioned.
This continuous type works with a digital rotary encoder, which simply "counts" pulses to figure out how far you've turned it and in which direction; the resulting setting is then usually displayed on some kind of numerical indicator.

@ Tony Yes, that's the question, whether the text suggests rotary switches having mechanical detents or not and tactile keyboards equipped with embossed printings (Braille) or not.
And please consider that each handicapped may have a different handicap. One person is blind, but can hear and another cannot hear, but see. Each person need a different tool to cope with terminals and other devices.

@ Johannes I think it is extremely dangerous to suggest completely inverting the sense of the source text without a great deal more justification.
It all depends on what kind of disability a user might have — people with some kind of prehension problems, for example, might not have fine enough control to handle quite finely incrementing rotary digital encoders, whereas they could handle a "traditional" rotary switch with mechanical detents. Likewise, certain people might find it difficult to cope with a touch-screen, for reasons perhaps of touch-sensitivity, or possibly just slow reaction times.

agree Tony M : Though not 'dials'; but 'continuous rotary controls' should be OK.

agree philgoddard : Agree with Tony. I assume continuous means stepless, so that sight-impaired people can't operate them by feel. "Continuous rotary controls" sounds better than "knobs" in my opinion.

disagree Tony M : Simply not EN, I'm afraid. 'button' more usually implies something you press rather than turn; if a noun is used as a qualifier, it stays singular (commands); the adj. 'free' is meaningless here; 'freely rotating' could have some sense.
