A composition for application to a substrate to render the substrate laser markable, which composition comprises a saccharide or derivative thereof dispersed in a carrier, wherein the composition further comprises a flame-retarding agent selected from the group consisting of di-melamine orthophosphate, melamine polyphosphate, melamine borate, melamine cyanurate, hydroxyl zinc stannate, and zinc hydroxystannate, and wherein the saccharide is present at a concentration of between 2% and 50% w/w.
