relaciones de causas de fe

I'm having some trouble finding an English equivalent for this in what I imagined would be a fairly well-translated area of study.

"Causas de fe" seems to be referring to prosecutions of crimes against the faith, although I haven't found a standard translation for this (my candidates are "causes of faith", "trials of faith", and the far less common "trials for commiting [sic] crimes against the faith").

Personally, I would translate it as "prosecutions of faith", but I've seen no examples of this in scholarly work. I'm also not sure whether the term is synonymous with "procesos de fe"; if it is, then I need look no further than "trials of faith".

The "relaciones" part is a little trickier still. I have seen "summaries" used, and "lists" would be the obvious choice, but that doesn't paint the whole picture.

"Las relaciones de causas de fe eran listados de procesados por los distintos tribunales de distrito, ya sentenciados. Estas listas de encausados eran remitidas por duplicado al Consejo de la Inquisición y al Inquisidor General para su control".

Searching "causas de fe" in CREA, I get zero-zilch However in CORDE, you can find a bunch of examples.

Hi Chris, the text is referring to sets of original documents from entire period of the Spanish Inquisition, i.e., from the 15th to the 19th century. I believe these "relaciones" are from the earlier period, but I'm not sure.

Thank you, Terezia. I will probably go with "reports" here. On further reflection, they do appear to be summarized reports or accounts of the trials sent to the Council of the Inquisition and to the Inquisitor General.

Likewise relegated to a secondary role by most researchers, relaciones de visitas report for the most part only internal discipline and minor cases dealt with in situ by inquisitors. I thought about "accounts" too, "trial accounts" would work, in my view, for the second part of the expression.

The "causas de fe" part is the point to handle, as in what modifier should accompany "trials", if "inquisitorial" doesn't do the trick...

Searching a little bit more, in this link "causa de fe" is somewhat defined as the "file" or "dossier of the inquiry".

Thanks, John. I don't think I'd use "inquisitorial trial" here for "causa de fe" though. An "inquisitorial trial" suggests the sort of trial commonly held here in Mexico and much of Latin America, where the court does the investigating, as opposed to an "adversarial" one, as in the US, etc. I think "records" might imply the documents of the tribunal itself, but having looked further into this (actually just a couple of lines further down in the PARES reference I gave above (*blush*)), perhaps "reports" or "accounts" or "summaries" might be a better solution than my original idea of "listings".
