Spanish term

cobertura de la excavacion

Spanish to English Other Archaeology
Hello colleagues.

It is an archaeological text from Chile, it is really a set of Instructions of what to do during an excavation

" Se deben implementar las siguientes medidas con miras a revertir las alteraciones causadas por la intervencion arqueologica
1.Protección de perfiles de la excavación
2.Cobertura de la excavación
3. Recoleccion de la basura que se haya generado durante los trabajos realizados en el área."

Discussion

Sara Fairen Oct 1, 2018:
It means to protect the profiles and the areas excavated with plastic sheets or more usually geotextile previous to refilling with soil, once the excavation is finished - in this case "revertir las alteraciones" must mean not leaving an open hole, since archaeology is in itself destructive and it cannot be reverted.
It means that if the excavation is reopened in the future it is easy to get rid of the soil to get to the level where the work stopped.
philgoddard Oct 1, 2018:
I was thinking "while the excavation is being carried out", but yes, it's more likely to mean afterwards, replacing the soil that's been removed.
carrbriz (asker) Oct 1, 2018:
pues eso es lo que creo que tiene que ver con cubrir la zona ya excavada, o mientras la estan excavando. Alguna sugerencia en ingles?
philgoddard Oct 1, 2018:
It presumably means "cover", but I don't see how that would help to "revertir las alteraciones".

draping the excavation

The plan consisted of draping a geotextile over the area in question and backfilling on top of the geotextile with mud.

Cloth sheeting is also handy to drape over partially excavated units or features further minimizing dehydration. This more localized draping also provides additional protection as the larger plastic sheets or tarps are pulled across the excavation area.

Note from asker:
Hola, creo que la idea por la que me inclino tiene mas que ver con cubrir la zona en la que estan excavando. Pero por alguna razon no se me ocurre como decirlo. Gracias por ayudarme

neutral philgoddard : This doesn't work because it's a "medida".

cover the excavations (after completion)

I assume this is what cobertura means, as cowering the site with soil afterwards would "revertir las alteraciones".
