Er moet voorkomen worden dat er lekstromen via de rotor lopen - dit kan gebeuren als de windingen van de rotor een direct elektrisch contact hebben met de rotor. Om een dergelijke situatie te kunnen detecteren zijn er (kool)borstels aangebracht via welke kan worden gemeten of de rotor onder spanning staat.
