@ Asker Not really any subtlety — it just means if you intend to drink and likely get a hangover, do it so that you feel bad in your employer's time rather than spoil your own free time. E.g. drink on a Sunday night, so if you feel bad, it is on Monday while you're at work — instead of doing what most people do and drink on a Saturday night, so they'll "have Sunday to get over it and be fit for work on Monday morning!"
So it's like the reverse of normal sensible advice! Don't waste your own leisure time feeling ill...

Je pense que tu as raison. Il n'y a pas de subtilités, il s'agit d'un conseil cynique, le journaliste expérimenté (probablement désabusé) conseille au nouveau de boire de préférence pendant le service. Vu le contexte du bar, ça me paraît tout à fait cohérent.

N'utilise jamais ton temps pour t'apitoyer sur ton sort.

Plus de contexte m'aiderait à trouver une équivalence à cette expression. Cependant, avec ce qu'il y a comme information, je dirais que "hangover" ici ne devrait pas se comprendre dans le sens de "gueule de bois".

Selon l'une de ses définitions dans le dictionnaire en ligne meeriam-webster, je dirais plutôt que "hangover" fait référence à un sentiment de culpabilité ou un regret lié à une impuissance face à une situation antérieure.

disagree Tony M : No, they are drinking in a bar, and it is definitely talking about a hangover caused by excessive drinking. The definition you cite is a very rarely used one, def. 2 a is the one that applies here.

disagree Daryo : "Conseil d'un journaliste à un autre (nouveau)" ... them being journalists, [with all the tradition of "liquid lunches" ...] it's 99.99% sure they are talking of the most literal hangover. HERE looking for unusual/figurative meanings is pointless!
