Spanish term

barra ilustrada

Spanish to English Other Cooking / Culinary
Does anybody know what a "barra ilustrada" is? I have looked for information on the internet and although there are several references I haven't been able to find a description. From the look of a few of the sites I found, it may have something to do with serving smaller portions of things, but that may just have been a coincidence.

The phrase is from an article about gastronomy:

Thanks for the help!

gourmet wine/tapas bar (or wine & tapas)

There are lots of examples of ¨taberna/tasca¨ilustrada, some of them with a bar. I believe it refers to what we would call a ¨gastro pub¨in the first case and a bar serving wine and tapas in the second.

I am positive you are right, after reading detailed descriptions all over the internet, although a distinction seems to be made between "gastrobares" and "tabernas ilustradas", which I'm not too sure about… Maybe this would be the difference between "gastro bars" and "gastro pubs"? tile-decorated taverns

It is a reference to the ornately painted tile decorations typical of the late 19th century taverns in Madrid. Restaurants replicating the decoration and the traditional recipes seem to be fashionable again. Here,"barra" (the bar) stands for the whole tavern and the food eaten at it.

I just feel some of their character gets lost when you call them tapas bar… The key here is very traditional, yet modern. Alternatively, “neotaverns” seems to be used as well.

A self-described "neotavern" that's about as market-driven as they come. It's literally inside of one.

Some are labeling it a "neotavern," a modern take on centuries-old food culture and the history and preservation of the region.

neutral philgoddard : I wondered about this, but the images I looked at didn't appear to be tile decorated.

Ilustración = The Enlightenment

Although I have no axe to grind in this query, I was wondering if the "ilustrada" component might have some kind of link, however tenuous, to the Enlightenment or Age of Reason, the 18th century intellectual and philosophical movement in Europe...
