Microtransactions can be beneficial to the consumer in that they allow 'free to play' games such as the multitude of mobile games available and the most popular game on the planet - League of Legends - to be financially viable. (tremr)

When you look at it in this light you can really see why Games As Service have taken off in recent years, and why the industry puts so much emphasis on microtransactions, whether those are skins in Fortnite (a game the NPD doesn't even track) reticles in Black Ops 4 or Gold Bars in Red Dead Online.
