English term
literacy
I understand it's about basic skills but I don't really understand what level it corresponds to in France ?
Thanks a lot

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

: It sounds to me more like "reading level" than "education level." In other words, their reading/writing skills are at the level of X (a 3rd grader, a high-school graduate, etc.).

: In the context of India, given the high level of illiteracy in the population, I think this is not only the usual translation of the term, but also the correct one.

Discussion
I think they mean "Literacy And Level of Education".
Normally the "literacy" OF ONE PERSON would be to know whether "cette personne est illettrée ou non" - absolutely nothing more. That's why you have "Literacy And Level of Education" as TWO separate categories, where "Level of Education" is relevant ONLY for those who are not illiterate (only about 60% of population in India!)
"Niveau d'alphabétisation" would indicate the proportion of those who are not illiterate in the whole population of a country, or of a region, or in some large groupe. Makes no sense for one person only.
on voit qu'ils commencent par "Literacy and level of education", je pense donc qu'ils font la différence.
