German term

[EAN] VPE

German to English Bus/Financial Transport / Transportation / Shipping EAN Labelling
This is with reference to goods packed on pallets to be shipped, where the EAN number is a 13-digit number and the EAN VPE number is also a 13-digit number with the number identical apart from the final two digits.

I know what this stands for - EAN Verpackungseinheit. What I can't find out for certain is the abbreviation that is the equivalent of VPE in English. I have found reference to "GTIN" (Global Trade Item Number) or "PU" (packaging unit) but I am not sure which I should use.

Dies anyone have the requisite knowledge? I have not found anything online that gives me the answer I am looking for.

Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 26, 2020:
Thank you very much, Björn for putting so much effort into this. You should have made a suggestion, but unfortunately I have already closed this. However, I think I shall consult the client about their preference and I have some more material to work on now.
Björn Vrooman Aug 25, 2020:
Hello Sarah I didn't want to come back to this until I found something. I think I just did. Please see:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bulk-Buy-Cupcake-Creations-3-Pack...
https://www.upcitemdb.com/upc/656290360258

It is an imperfect solution (the last link I gave you is still the best list of abbreviations I could find), but if you use Qty and Pkg, you could possibly get away with it. See also this link: http://www.ginsbergsfoods.com/storage/nutrition/56280.PDF

It's a bit hard to read, as someone had to rotate that doc by 90° (ugh), but you can see a "Case GTIN" and a "Pkg GTIN" in the upper left-hand corner.

May work. Otherwise, it's back to the last document I sent you. I don't think there is any other option.

Best wishes and good night!
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 23, 2020:
Thanks again for your help, Björn Good night!
Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
Sarah The only list of codes I can offer you is here on p. 6:
https://www.gs1.org/docs/gdsn/mjr-elearning_old/TIUD_GDS_MjR...

I have to bow out of the discussion for now. Still, best of luck!
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 23, 2020:
Thank you, Johannes Unfortunately my client wants an abbreviation that equates to "VPE" - from what you say below, "PU" might be confusing, although it is the obvious choice. All references I can find are in German, which s not very helpful at the moment.
Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
Considering what Kim... ...and Johannes posted below, I'd think you could use GTIN instead of EAN because the only thing that seems to have changed is the name.
http://www.etikettenwissen.de/wiki/GTIN#:~:text=Die Global T...

See also: "European Article Number (EAN) – The name given to the standard barcode image that represents the 13 digit GTIN on most products you buy in shops in the UK and globally, except for North America."
https://www.gs1uk.org/our-industries/retail/selling-on-marke...

"GTIN-13 = Global Trade Item Number (Globale Artikelidentnummer)

(vor 2009: EAN-13 = Europäische Artikelnummerierung (13-stellig)"
https://www.code-knacker.de/gtin.htm

This is less of an issue then.
Johannes Gleim Aug 23, 2020:
@ Sarah GTIN is the same as EAN. New name, same product.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Article_Number
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 23, 2020:
Actually it may not be on the label It is on a product data sheet and gives the details as I wrote them out below.
I found the guidelines you sent me the link to myself earlier, and failed to find the answer in them. Maybe "PU" would do on the data sheet, as I assume from what I have read about the subject and what you said below that I can't mix up EAN and GTIN.
Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
Thanks for the quick reply When you say "used on the label itself," do you mean this:
https://www.barcode.graphics/education-gtin-14-barcode/

Even the guidelines I found don't speak of PUs:
https://www.gs1.org/docs/tl/GS1_Logistic_Label_Guideline.pdf

It's not that I don't know what a PU is (I used to work at business software firms), but I can't remember seeing PU on a label anywhere.

In fact, I don't recall ever seeing [EAN] VPE on a label either. It's just "EAN," since the numbers (as you said) are different anyway. Actually, even if you were to change only the number of bottles etc., you'd need a new GTIN: https://www.gs1.org/1/gtinrules/en/rule/270/packcase-quantit...

Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Best
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 23, 2020:
Björn - those are the sort of thing But I still can't find anything in English to confirm whether using "PU" is appropriate.
Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
Here, too You can see it at the bottom:
https://www.hakopaxan-shop.de/html/besser-als-leberwurst-roe...

First is for EAN [Stück], second for EAN [Gebinde].

Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
Hello Sarah Is it something like this (see p. 18)
https://www.c-m.ltd/download/portfolio_2019_de.pdf

I was thinking that the first is per item, the second per pack/case etc.
Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Aug 23, 2020:
Thank you, Björn and Kim I have taken a look at the documents and I am still unsure. The format of the label is:

EAN: 1234567890012
EAN VPE: 1234567890089
VPE: 6 Stk.

And I do not know whether the first instance of VPE should also be PU or not.
Björn Vrooman Aug 23, 2020:
To add to Kim's posts "Für jede Verpackungseinheit existiert eine eigene GTIN. Bei der grün markierten Verpackungsebene handelt es sich um die Verkaufsmengeneinheit."
https://de.erbe-med.com/de-de/service/productcodes/

GTIN website:
"Of these, ITF-14, GS1-128, and GS1 Databar employ 14-digit data structures of which the 14th character is a packaging level indicator (i.e., item or case). Both UPC and EAN have an implied packaging level of a single item."
https://www.gtin.info

GS 1 US:
"Trade items include individual items as well as all other packaging configurations offered for sale (e.g., two-pack; case; pallet; etc.). Each packaging level is identified by a unique GTIN. For example, Brand X would use a different GTIN to uniquely identify their individual tissue unit, four pack tissue unit, and their case of tissues along with any other product configurations that will move through the supply chain. Packing unit (PU) Usually, a packing unit is a collection of a number of basic packages. The size of the packing unit is stated for the particular components in their data sheets. When ordering, please state complete packing units if possible. We reserve the right to round the ordered quantity accordingly. https://www.tdk-electronics.tdk.com/download/531558/4557638c...
Kim Metzger Aug 23, 2020:
Looks like The GTIN are the numbers, the EAN is the barcode
Barcode GTIN-13 (formerly called EAN-13)
The GTIN item numbers (GTIN – Global Trade Identification Number) are assigned to identify units of retail, units of sale and pallets.
A GTIN-13 (EAN item number) is constructed as an EAN-13 barcode. The GTIN’s are digits beneath the barcode. Main structure
of a GTIN item number is a GS1 prefi x, a company prefi x, an item reference assigned by the company, and a check digit.

Hello Sarah Pp. 16/17: https://www.cs.hs-rm.de/~werntges/lv/edi/pdf/ss2005/edieb-id...

Does this help? VPE is not GTIN, since that's close to EAN.

[EAN] Packaging Unit or Packing Unit

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Article_Number

The International Article Number (also known as European Article Number or EAN) is a standard describing a barcode symbology and numbering system used in global trade to identify a specific retail product type, in a specific packaging configuration, from a specific manufacturer. The standard has been subsumed in the Global Trade Item Number standard from the GS1 organization; the same numbers can be referred to as GTINs and can be encoded in other barcode symbologies defined by GS1.

Found no "PU" for VPE, either.
PU means normally Polyurethane, very common in the commerce.

Science and technology
Plutonium, a chemical element, symbol Pu
Processing unit, an electronic circuit that performs operations on some external data source

Thank you. But is that is what is used on the label itself? I have seen GTIN referred to as well and I am not certain which abbreviation is used.
