Using electrocautery, an incision was then made in the detrusor muscle along the natural course of the ureter for a distance of approximately 6-7 cm. This incision was carried down to the mucosal layer but not through it.
A buttonhole of mucosa was then removed at the point of the old ureteral insertion.
Since the ureter was quite dilated, the incision was made at this point to taper and tailor the ureter down.
