Czech term

psychické jevy

Czech to English Medical Psychology Psychology
Can anyone help with this please? Not convinced that "psychological phenomena" is right, bearing in mind the definition here: https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychický_jev
"Psychické jevy dělíme do tří skupin dle jejich délky trvání.

psychické procesy
psychické stavy
psychické vlastnosti"

Apologies if it is blindingly obvious, but the more I Google it the more my head hurts

Yet another answer: mental phenomena
Charles Stanford (asker) Jan 26, 2021:
I don't think Ivan is too far off. I never realised that psychical or psychic could be used in that sense but it can - "relating to or happening in the mind rather than in the body" https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/psychic. I will go with Lubosh and Stuart's solution but am tempted to add an "agree" to Ivan to balance out the disagrees, because I don't think it is as cut and dried as all that! Thanks to everyone
Ivan Šimerka Jan 26, 2021:
Hannah Geiger Just put "psychical phenomena" including the parentheses into Google search
Hannah Geiger (X) Jan 26, 2021:
@Ivan I don't get your "It can neither be psychological, the phenomena exist even without psychology". I suppose I have long cables.:)
I can't open the link you gave, due to malwarebytes. However, the psychical looks pretty psychic to me https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/psych...
Lubosh Hanuska Jan 25, 2021:
psychic vs. psychological Those two terms are, of course, not the same, but related :-)
The meaning of "psychické" a "psychologické" in Czech is much closer, but still not identical.
Ivan Šimerka Jan 25, 2021:
Hannah Geiger, Jiří Lonský You are right, the common use of "psychic phenomena" has the meaning of "paranormal phenomena", anything to do with parapsychology. IMO, this is a sort of a short-cut, which can be seen in Czech, too.
It can neither be psychological, the phenomena exist even without psychology.

Then, what about "psychical phenomena"?

It's quite promising
Ivan Šimerka Jan 25, 2021:
Psychological ->concerning the science of psychology
Psychic ->concerning psyche
Charles Stanford (asker) Jan 25, 2021:
Stuart you are bloody good!
Stuart Hoskins Jan 25, 2021:
For what it’s worth Not that I trust it 100%, but Googling "psychological processes, psychological states, and" led me to “all psychological phenomena can be separated into three groups, psychological processes, psychological states, and psychological features”. A Systemic-Structural Theory of Activity: Applications to Human Performance, p. 452. Gregory Bedny (a Ukrainian-American psychologist) and Waldemar Karwowski
Charles Stanford (asker) Jan 25, 2021:
Afraid not. Will see if I can get some more details
Martin Janda Jan 25, 2021:
Any context please? .

psychological phenomena

The word phenomenon does include and describe all three types - processes, states, and characteristics (or properties). That is - in English... The problem you have encountered, I believe, is with the meaning of "jevy" in Czech as intuitively it is describing more something of an event or process...
In my opinion the meaning is correct, feel free to remove your doubt :-)

disagree Jiri Lonsky : "psychic phenomena" has a different connotation in English, so far as I know.

The difference between "psychological" and "psychic" is the same in English and in Czech. I cannot agree with you.
neutral Hannah Geiger (X) : I believe Jiri is correct here, Ivan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parapsychology#Early_physical_... Parapsychology is the study of alleged psychic phenomena
6 hrs
disagree Ervin Sisak : 'psychic' indeed pertains to 'super-natural phenomena' and it is rarely used to relate to 'psyche' or the 'state of mind'
