Medical: Health Care
Choice of correct word
Dear professional translators,
My agency is translating a file for the general public (adult people/seniors) about use of cannabis in Canada. A polish translator translated the word "cannabis" as "marijuana". My client asks to subsitute the word "marijuana" with the word "cannabis". The reasoning behind that is that the scientific group that developed the booklet insists on using the word "cannabis" rather than "marijuana" since marijuana is more a slang than a medical term and is not intended to be used in the translation since the booklet is about usage of cannabis for medical/health care and recreational purposes. The translator refuses to make changes explaining that word cannabis does not exist and understood in the Polish language. Please share your expertise and advice.
Thank you!

I still believe this is right. Even the links from your most recent post have "marihuana" all over, with "konopie" mentioned only in passing. But the entire misunderstanding is not your fault, it's the way the question was asked

What’s the definition of cannabis?
Cannabis refers to a group of three plants with psychoactive properties, known as Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis.
When the flowers of these plants are harvested and dried, you’re left with one of the most common drugs in the world. Some call it weed, some call it pot, and others call it marijuana.
As weed becomes legal in more areas, names for it are evolving. Today, more and more people are using the term cannabis to refer to weed.
Some argue that it’s a more accurate name. Others feel it’s more neutral compared with terms like weed or pot, which some people associate with its illegal use. Also, the term “marijuana” is falling out of favor due to its racist history.
Cannabis is usually consumed for its relaxing and calming effects. In some U.S. states, it’s also prescribed to help with a range of medical conditions, including chronic pain, glaucoma, and poor appetite.
Keep in mind that while cannabis comes from a plant and is considered natural, it can still have strong effects, both positive and negative.

Discussion
38 million of Poles do spell "marihuana" ! :)
Ja najbardziej nie lubię tych 10-ciu od liny! :/
Taaa ... :DD

Od października 2017 medyczne produkty konopne mogą być przywożone do kraju - https://t.ly/OYFk

W zeszłym roku polscy parlamentarzyści zalegalizowali medyczne produkty konopne - https://t.ly/8hn0
Well, I suggested to change a bit -- "z konopi" instead of "konopne".
A "produkty konopne" googles somehow, and maybe a "produkty wytwarzane z konopii" would replace "produkty konopne".
To be frank, I got lost so tell me, you would like to name a cannabis" - marihuana everywhere in the translated booklet.
Anyway, it's at a glance visible that the answerer choosed rather scant confidence, thus he doesn't deserve the 11 disagree in your life.
Though, people using cannabis PRODUCTS like oil, eatable and inhaling products, take, as I said twice already ;), advantage of konopie /cannabis in Canada, but are being treated by "marihuana lecznicza/medyczna" in Poland ;).
So ... have a very good time in times :) to come, greetings, dear ALL!
Being that stubborn translator in question, I have a few things to say. It is not true that 99% of the booklet is about plant - it is about advantages and potential risks of using cannabis PRODUCT - also to get high, which is perfectly legal in Canada.
I don't know anyone getting high on "produkty konopne" - but hey, the client is always right! Right? Right!
Also, it's marihuana, not marijuana. Is marihuana slang in Polish by ay stretch of imagination?
I am certain that proposal by @geopiet here is perfectly placed as equivalent, accordingly.
I am going to support this his answer.
Cheers!
Cannabis use by older adults is increasing. Some want to see if it helps with the effects of aging and chronic disease. Others just enjoy using it
Again, if anything in your English text refers to plant, the proper translation is -- konopie (plural). Marihuana, oils you've mentioned, etc. products are made from konopie, thus are - produkty konopne - including marihuana.
I do agree with our colleauge Frank here, except - Polish spelling is marihuana, not marijuana.
Cannabis is not a proper word in Polish, in your context to name the good/product actually, since cannabis is a plant (in Polish reality :).
So, "general public (adult people/seniors)" in Canada are compelled to take advantage of "marihuana" in Polish language, not "cannabis" :).
A Polish translator did thus well, I strongly believe.
Indyjska odmiana konopi, tak zwana cannabis indica w przeciwieństwie do cannabis sativa była w znacznie mniejszym stopniu przydatna do produkcji ubrań ze względu na krótsze i gorszej jakości włókna

This is the only federally funded site where it is legal to cultivate cannabis for scientific research in the United States.
To jest jedyne utrzymywane przez rząd miejsce legalnej uprawy konopi indyjskich do badań naukowych w całych USA.
