French term

Dilatation conventionnelle à l'humidité

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Engineering test report

Discussion

Dominique Stiver Apr 13, 2021:
which confirms the word "conventionnelle" is not an abus de langage and should be accordingly translated as "convenitional" and not "usual" (usual is a little like "normal", what is usual and what is not?
Dominique Stiver Apr 13, 2021:
conventionnelle in the source may be an "abus de langage" and should have been courante/habituelle

Ceramic tiles and slabs - Part 10: determination of moisture expansion.
Peer comment(s):

neutral ormiston : Is this really the term? Moisture doesn't itself expand! I'd have thought it was a swelling due todamp

I didn`t write the reference.
agree Cyril Tollari : Just use 'moisture expansion'. We don't use 'dilatation conventionnelle à l'humidité' anymore, but simply 'dilatation à l'humidité'

Thank you.
agree Tony M : Standard way of expressing 'expansion due to moisture' — nothing to do with 'damp'!

Thank you, sounds much better than expansion due to alcohol

Meaning is the same as the other translations, but this just sounds better to my ear.

the expected expansions caused by humidity or dampness

"The additional or complementary features are specified while the normally accepted shapes or forms of the product are defined, to which clay bricks or slabs conform as they are intended for the standardized masonry constructions, so that the clay bricks or slabs are resistant to frost, along with their expected expansions caused by humidity or dampness for all the clay slabs, as they are measured with the relevant test methods."

Note the reference which explains the thermal expansion of clay bricks caused by temperature changes which cause water condensation and dampness. Conventional expansions follow the accepted customs. Clay bricks are more than one. Temperature changes are more than one.

Example sentence:

"Il spécifie les caractéristiques complémentaires de ces produits et il définie les formes courantes auxquelles doivent répondre les briques de terre cuites, ainsi que la résistance au gel-dégel des briques.

Il y a aussi la dilatation conventionnelle à l'humidité pour toutes les briques de terre cuite, selon des mesures effectués conformément aux méthodes d'essai correspondantes."

Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : There is no justification here to make 'expansion' plural, 'expected' is over-translation for 'conventionnelle, and 'dampness' is inappropriate here for 'humidité'
