German term

Nadelkissenkuder

German to English Tech/Engineering Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) Porcelain production
The text concerned is a brief history of a factory that produced porcelain in the 19th/early 20th century. The actual text is:

Produziert wurden darin - neben den bekannten Puppenteilen - ***Nadelkissenkuder***, Teepuppenköpfe, Badefiguren, Weihkessel, Heiligenfiguren, Salzstreuer und Eierbecher. Der Betrieb produzierte bis 1938.

The only thing that gives me any form of translation is Deepl, which uses "pin cushion balls", but I do not think the balls themselves would be porcelain, and I doubt that "male lynx" is appropriate in this case.

Discussion

Sarah Lewis-Morgan (asker) Apr 16, 2021:
Thanks, Phil They do look a trifle risqué! "Teepuppen" are "half dolls" in English according to what I have found. The pin cushion figure may well be an example, so the lynx connection might be a red herring.

I did find this about Teepuppen, in this case being prosecuted for indecency:
http://stanisl.beepworld.de/
It also includes a picture of a Nadelkissen consisting of a porcelain woman in a fabric dress that you stick your needles into. I wonder if it might be something like this.

Thanks.

Thanks for your answers Phil - the company was Kestner & Co., based in Ohrdruf. I haven't been able to find anything useful online, and the client has not yet replied to my question. It's possible I won't get much of an answer from them - this is for an exhibition in a local museum and unless they have examples they might not know. Since it seems odd that they would have only produced pin cushions (or maybe the holders for pin cushions) in one style/shape I was wondering if this is specialist term.
philgoddard Apr 16, 2021:
I think Stuart and Ada's interpretation is the most likely, though Kuder in their ring reference below appears to be the jeweler's name. Could we have the name of the porcelain manufacturer? You're not giving away any confidential information if it closed in 1938.
thefastshow Apr 16, 2021:
KUDER could refer to the male lynx, but also to a male wildcat (felis sylvestris) https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuder
In the given context it does not feel inappropriate to imagine a cat figurine of some kind serving as a pincushion.
Stuart and Aida Nelson Apr 16, 2021:
Kuder It probably relates to the shape. See the following link:

lynx (wild cat) shaped pin cushion

According to antiques, pin cushions were also made in shapes of animals, see below porcelain pin cushion in form of an elephant:

Kuder = lynx

1 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for your efforts. I have been informed by the client that they prefer the more general "holder" and that this is not specific to a lynx or any other animal, but your input is nevertheless appreciated."

Pin cushion cat

Difficult to tell. In older times Kuder had this meaning in some dialects:
kûder: Werg, Abfall von Hanf und Flachs
https://wortgeschichten.tumblr.com/post/88553480409/wortgesc...

Werg was used for making pin cushions: "...Werg umpolsterter und in einen Lappen eingenähter Stein diente zum Fest- stecken des Zeuges während der Arbeit und als Nadelkissen."
https://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/kg-zs-innendekorati...

Nevertheless, taking into account the other series of items mentioned and the active years of the manufactory it is more likely that Kuder refers to a male cat in general as this term can be found for a male cat in some dialects :

„Die Bayerisch-Österreichische Wörterbuchkommission ersucht höflichst um Mitteilungder für die nachstehend aufgeführten ... Kater (Koder, Kuder, Kodl, Leanl).
Item 001/17:
https://www.bwb.badw.de/en/fragebogen/mundartgeographischer....

Apart from that, Kuder still is the denomination for the male wild cat and the male lynx at present. :
“...Männliche Wildkatze – Kuder (Kater = männliche Hauskatze). Weibliche Wildkatze – Katze oder Kätzin. Körperlänge: Kuder 83 bis 97 cm. Katze 73 bis 94 cm.“
https://www.nabu-untertaunus.de/flora-fauna-im-gebiet-nabu-u...

Wild cats were quite a popular sujet at the time and one can find quite a number of etchings of the european wild cat.
https://www.bierl-antiquariat.de/katze-wildkatze-spuhr-vom-w...

A lot of Kestners products given his creative and business minded spirit would not neccessarily be considered "high art" and a fair amount of the complete product range over the years would have vanished by now.

Cats are a rather very popular subject to the very day, so it´s very likely that we can talk about a pin cushion cat or cat pin cushion here.

I believe we would be talking about something like this:

check more here: https://www.google.com/search?q=pin cushion cat&tbm=isch&sou...

"Cat" for Kuder should work here for the English translation imho.
