Bij een hemisectie wordt één van de wortels van een kies (molaar) los geboord en verwijderd. Hierdoor blijft de rest van de kies en de wortels gespaard.<br /><br />Dit kan als bijvoorbeeld als slechts één van de wortels ontstoken is, of een hemisectie wordt gedaan om de kies beter reinigbaar te maken bij tandvleesontsteking.<br /><br />Omdat de kies zelf nog blijft zitten kan een eventueel aanwezige kroon of brug blijven zitten of juist nog gebruikt worden als pijlerelement voor een brug.
