Polish term

"ładne dali pan"

Polish to English Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Ceramic decoration
"Młode to 17-cie lat, ładne dali pan, aż miło było ustawiać paluszki"

The text is from a letter by Chopin discussing one of his piano students, but I'm afraid this phrase has completely foxed me.

Discussion

Jacek Rogala (X) May 18, 2021:
Absolutely, he's my neighbour, and often rests in a gadda da vida :D

Andrzej Mierzejewski May 17, 2021:
I'd say: She's pretty, per Baccho!

BTW I hope Bacchus is not too high over the rainbow. ;-)
Jacek Rogala (X) May 14, 2021:
:) I cannot stop thinking about Frank's offer here, how adequate it is and naturally covering the context of times that passed.
Majority of us are affraid of referencing to the highest authorities somewhere over the rainbow, but Chopin and Frank do not! :)

pretty, I swear//by Jove

Something equally archaic.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jacek Rogala (X) : by Jove... Great one, very archaic indeed, older than Chopin was! :D; I even forgave you the borrowing of a "swear" :D

Yes, "by Jove" stands alone. Thank you, Jacek.

(she's) pretty, darn it/I'll be

"Dalipan" should be spelt together, as a single word. It's a variant of "dalibóg", a mild curse, used to emphasise the message.

My suggestion in English as above, HTH,
