Arabic term

سواتر رملیةٌ

Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Syria
Hi everyone,

I'm translating a story in which the narrator travels from Sweida to Damascus and describes what happens at all the checkpoints along the way.

In this sentence, I'm having trouble capturing the image the author is describing. Especially the verbs اهتأرت and سال.

Context:
كیف تبدو هذه الحواجز؟ باستثناء شجيرات الدفلى القزمة والعطشانة والممرّغة بالرمل على رصیف الطریق، هنا على مدّ النظر فن تدویر مخلّفات الطبیعة لصنع حیطان وسقف یستریح تحته الجنود: سواتر رملیةٌ اهتأرت وسال رملها تحت الشمس، دوالیب كاوتشوك مرقّعة

Thanks for your help!

Abd Alrahman Almidani Aug 9, 2021:
Mr. Saeed These barriers are made of various materials. They contain some bags, but they are mostly just sand and stones. I know that road because I used to travel from Damascus to Sweida every day as my work was in Sweida city.
Saeed Najmi Aug 9, 2021:
عبارة سال رملها توحي بأن الحاجز الرملي يتكون من أكياس من الرمل حسب رأيي المتواصع.
Saeed Najmi Aug 9, 2021:
@Anam
Why don't you ask a separate question about اهترأت? There is obviously a typo there in اهتأرت.

sand barriers

I passed by these sand barriers hundreds of times when I used to teach at Sweida University. These barriers are used for two purposes. The first is during active combat to provide some kind of protection and the other is on the two sides of a road to provide protection for a checkpoint that blocks the road. They can be 1-3 meters high.

It is translated in international news websites and UN documents "Sand barriers". Find below a photo of a sand barrier: https://bit.ly/2X1iaIP

It's also used in UN documents: https://bit.ly/3CwfJOS

Lebanese municipal workers violated the Blue Line when creating a sand barrier in the same location
