Spanish term

completadores

Spanish to English Art/Literary Cooking / Culinary Mexican cuisine
In Chapter 2, La Revolución, in "Cocina Mexicana o historia gastronomica de la ciudad de México" by Salvador Novo (1979), a book about the history of cuisine in Mexico in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, they are discussing Mexican Revolution-era food, and the foods that the different classes of people (upper, middle, lower) would eat. The sentence that contains the term: "la clase media [...] la "sopa seca" consistente en arroz "a la mexicana"; algún guisado hecho con la carne que ya había rendido su sustancia en el caldo —y los imprescindibles frijoles: los "completadores". I am thinking this might mean "completers" or "finishers", as in, to top something off, kind of like the icing on the cake, but I am unsure if there is more historical context behind the term, and am not sure how to get that point across in an English translation. Thank you for any help in advance!

finishing touch

Rather than filling/filler foods, I think it might mean the items that round off or complete the meal, giving it the "finishing touch"...
Example sentence:

This will give your meal a real finishing touch...

In this case, the frijoles won't be the finishing touch to a meal...
