French term

jonctions multiples

French to English Other Telecom(munications)
This occurs in brackets after a telephone number, at the bottom of a degree certificate issued by a university.

Any ideas?

thanks!

multiple lines

I can only imagine it means 'switchboard' or something like that, i.e. several people can ring the number at the same time and still get through.

"79 à 89, rue Henri - Gauthier 93000 BOBIGNY Tél. : (1) 48.44.81.50 (JONCTIONS MULTIPLES)"

"Seul service agréé par la Fédération Mutualiste de la Région Parisienne Bureaux Ouvert aux Mutualistes et à tous les assurés sociaux 01.43.29.07.50. (JONCTIONS MULTIPLES) 24h/24"

There's a lot on the Web about MULTI-LINE PHONE SYSTEMS:
"What is a multi-line phone system? A multi-line phone system lets you handle two or more calls simultaneously. It enables employees to place calls on hold, dial internal or external numbers, and return to the line. Multi-line phones differ from phones with a single line that can only maintain one phone call at a time"

That said, I don't see the point in translating it or even putting it in French to start with! It changes nothing for the user. It simply suggests that the phone number is that of some tin-pot organization that is bragging about the fact that it has more than a simple domestic phone line. I can't say I can recall having ever seen anything like it in English, not even for small firms.

agree philgoddard : Yes, and I agree with your additional note too. You did used to see things like "six lines" in letterheadings - it has an oldfashioned ring.

Thanks. Now that you mention it, I think I recall seeing things like "six lines" too.

disagree philgoddard : Did you read the context?

disagree Johannes Gleim : It deals with phone lines and extension numbers. No semiconductor is targeted.

hunting lines

https://nexgen.com.au/latest-news/line-hunting-and-hunt-grou...

"What Is Line Hunting?
Line hunting is a strategy that businesses use to make sure that an incoming call does not go unanswered — or, at the least, give businesses the best chance of answering each call. The strategy is also called call hunting or call routing."

This is the jargon used in telephony -- I used to work for a phone company.

Phil: my inference being that not "anyone will understand" the term "jonctions multiples", it's just not a layperson's term, and the same could probably be said of "hunting lines", so it's very much an equivalent term.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : But we don't want jargon - this is the contact details on a degree certificate, and we need a term that anyone will understand.

Well, maybe I should have said "technical term". This is the term that is used in the business. The average French person could only guess at what "jonctions multiples" means.

agree Johannes Gleim : I also considers PBX, even it's old-fashioned. But may still exist.

Ni I think it's something to do with the telephone number. Maybe that there is a menu with options?
