The westerners take their seats, in their ‘darkened auditorium’, like an audience, like the audience: the West watching such atrocities from their position both of safety and very visible disquiet. This visibility is vital here, for it marks the West as moved by what is wrong with the picture, as both self-conscious and as having a conscience, even as they are powerless to do anything about it. However, what is also being underscored of course is the West as white, a conflation-cum-elision so pervasive in Hollywood yet so sustaining of racist paradigms: what is wrong with the bigger picture very much endures.
