French term

pépite

Non-PRO French to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
In a documentary about sports, a reporter is talking about an older athlete who used to be at the top of his sport but is now being overtaken by the younger generation.
The line is: "C'est compliqué pour lui de rivaliser face aux gamins de 20-25 ans, qui sont des pépites."

Do you have any suggestions on how to translate 'pépite'? Of course, I know what it literally means and I have also found some translations like 'wunderkind' or 'child prodigy' but I would like some other options and I am drawing a blank myself.

Thank you for your help!
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): abe(L)solano, Charles R.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Conor McAuley Mar 28, 2023:
I should have said "gems", plural, of course.

I prefer not to play for points these days.
Emmanuella Mar 28, 2023:
@ Conor,
Why don't you post it ?
Conor McAuley Mar 28, 2023:
I would suggest "gem":

'An absolute gem of a player for the next decade': Liverpool fans salivate at prospect of signing Jude Bellingham

A player/athlete with huge potential, but potential that is yet to be fully fulfilled.
Bourth Mar 28, 2023:
Definition On distingue 3 types de jeunes joueurs sur FIFA 23 mode carrière :
Pépites et jeunes prodiges : joueurs qui vont le plus progresser.
Plus haut potentiel : joueurs qui vont devenir les meilleurs joueurs du monde d’ici à quelques années.
Meilleurs U21 : meilleurs jeunes joueurs de 21 ans ou moins.

rising stars

I would favour rising stars in this context, sometimes there's an aspect of "undiscovered" which I imagine here is less the case than on the way to discovery. Athletics and some other sports actually have Rising Star awards.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, the idea is definitely 'promising newcomers'

neutral Charles R. : Certes ça fonctionne mais c'est surtraduit, la notion de rising n'est pas présente dans pépite.

elites / the elite of their generation

Please find the definition of elite there: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/elite
Even though this term has a financial and economical meaning in historical contexts, it nowadays could also be used in any context to describe a person/a group of people who outstand the rest in a certain category. (see one of the examples from the Cambridge definition mentioning "elite female athlete".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Not really: these are promising newcomers, but not yet risen to the heights of 'elite'

Tony, good point yes. Maybe we could risk assuming they'll become la crème de la crème and shall we add "of tomorrow"? As in "The elite of tomorrow"?

gems

Far too much time spent watching and reading about football and other sports. This is the right word.

See Discussion entries.

20-25 is quite young for most athletes (football, basketball, etc.).

The received wisdom is that athletes/players peak at about 28, all things considered (speed, endurance, etc.).
