English term

Tomcat mat

Non-PRO English Other Other
We had a mouse problem once. Emily didn’t want me to set traps because she thought it was
cruel. I guess I agreed at the time, but changed my mind after I found the first baby mouse stuck
on the surface of the Tomcat mat. The little guy was trying so damned hard to get free, and the
more he struggled, the more he stuck.

Is it some kind of a "humane" mousetrap, covered with glue maybe? Can't find anything by that name. The author is American. Thanks for your help.

I believe it is literally meant. Maybe it refers to the character of Tomcat. Check reference: https://dchome.in/products/welcome-tomcat-doormat

You already have your answer "Stuck on the surface" kind of gives it away. Here's a video about the product:

I believe the term "Tomcat mat" can be interpreted by its literal meaning.

Personally, I think the author is kind of playing with words here. The house owner didn't want to set any traps, but the mouse had already fallen into the hands of its seem-to-be natural predator - a CAT mat.

Hope this answer helps you in some type of ways.
