Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually learn to read and write. This knowledge is acquired through physical, sensorial and affective activities that include talking, singing and playing in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Reading to a toddler sitting on your lap, pointing at illustrations or singing a rhyme is not 'teaching them to read'; these are pre-literacy activities.
