French term

Ensemble en demi-teinte sur...

French to English Other Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs School transcript & report
This is for a school report of 2019-20 (i.e. during lockdown period).

Ensemble en demi-teinte sur l'annee scolaire. De la bonne volonte. Si le vocabulaire scientifique est parfois complique pour un francophone il est tres complique pour un allophone. Active durant le confinement.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): AllegroTrans

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

AllegroTrans Aug 27, 2023:
@ Lisa Sorry, you have totally misunderstood because, yet again, you ignore CONTEXT
Lara Barnett (asker) Aug 27, 2023:
@ Lisa I am not sure that ill be relevant beyond balance sheets, but thanks for the info, that is still quite interesting.
Emmanuella Aug 27, 2023:
Please ignore 'halftone' in this context.
Lisa Rosengard Aug 27, 2023:
A previous answer on Proz confirms an overall performance (in a report). The page from word reference explains that if a balance sheet is printed on half-tones background font then the figures are from half a year. Does it mean that a school report printed on tainted half tones is a report from half a year or one semester? The other reference describes the background font as neither light nor dark.
Emmanuella Aug 27, 2023:
I'm afraid we are not on the same wavelength. Please check the links I posted.
Lisa Rosengard Aug 27, 2023:
Sorry. It's a report which shows all of the relevant results and comments on paper which is a little bit tainted, on a faded font which is not perfectly clear. (The references already posted explain the definition.)
Emmanuella Aug 27, 2023:
Lisa,
Why are you mentioning this ?
Lisa Rosengard Aug 27, 2023:
I read references about daily recommended activity in schools, which include 30 minutes of organized physical activity each day for school pupils. Statistics reveal that during lock-down those 30 minutes of physical activity were reduced in many cases, while time spent by a screen increased. After lock-down statistics show percentages of people who increased their daily physical activity.

Half-hearted/mixed results overall for the school year

Robert Collins French dictionary
Example sentence:

notre équipe a eu une saison en demi-teinte: our team had a season with mixed results

Peer comment(s):

agree AllegroTrans : "Mixed results" would be best; half-hearted sounds too judgemental and is overtranslation

agree Yvonne Gallagher : Mixed results

neutral Andrew Bramhall : "Half-hearted" applies to attitude and commitment, or rather lack thereof, and not to attainment. IMHO, better than 'mixed' would be ' indifferent', despite Allegro's vociferous proclamation in favour of the former' ;

Mixed results overall in... (the academic year)

That should do it.

See the third definition here, for "en demi-teinte":

all in all, rather middle-of-the-road

'average perfformance' rather than a 'mediocre or borderline showing' over the academic year.

Mixed results is already in the ProZ Glossaries - pls. read the second weblink *closely and carefully*, as I have the Discussion Entries.
Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : Total overtranslation: mixed is mixed is mixed; no need to use "flair and imagination" here

Overall: could/must do better

The classic UK school report comment for indifferent performance. Even once used by Margaret Thatcher as a comment on the UK economy early on during her " reign".
Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : Total overtranslation: mixed is mixed is mixed // so swapping the obvious meaning for a judgemental statement that is not in the ST is a sound translation method? Come on...this is dangerous

Typically dismissive, strident and categoric; you even had to cut and paste your reply to AMM's answer; not impressive.//Not my problem if you lack the flair and imagination to see how this could work.;
