Hi all. This is a phrase I need to translate for a medical terminology class.

Online I find "sangrado entre menstruaciones" - "sangrado entre reglas" - "sangrado entre periodos menstruales"

Which of these would be most appropriate to use with Mexican patients?

In such a case I would avoid any technicism and use clear and understable terms, keeping the same tone of source text btw.
"sangrado entre períodos" would be the best adaptation as I first suggest (even without accent mark;).

yo siempre la he escrito sin tilde salvo si me piden la variante ES LA.
olimpiada, austriaca... muchas palabras tienen esa doble grafía. Y es un detalle que a mucha gente se le escapa.

La tilde Sí, Oscar. Me había dado cuenta de que faltaba la tilde cuando escribí "sangrado entre periodos menstruales." Gracias por la aclaración.

añadir que periodo sin acento es lo normal en España y que período con tilde es lo general por Hispanoamérica.

Mantener los mismos términos y decir sangrado entre periodos parece lo adecuado.
Cualquiera de esas opciones vale, al menos en España.

Sangrado entre períodos menstruales

Given the context, I wouldn´t go for "regla" as this term is more informal. "período menstrual" is a neutral approach for a wider audience, and the best option to me.

metrorragia

In Spain, the medical term for "bleeding between periods" is very precise and is known to all doctors: it is called "metrorragia", as opposed to "menorragia", which denotes heavier than normal bleeding DURING menstruation.

I do not know if this term is also used by medical doctors in Mexico, but I suppose so.

If the class is intended for patients, I would use "Sangrado entre períodos menstruales".
If it is intended for health personnel, "metrorragia" is more appropriate (in Spain).

Thank you for this most precise term. The class is intended for medical interpreters who will be using it with patients in a hospital or clinic. (Here in the U.S. most of the Spanish speakers we work with are from Mexico.)
I think I'll add the terms "menorragia" and "metrorragia" to the lesson, however, just so that the interpreters will be familiar with these more technical terms as well. Thanks.
