Although a zero or fresh air offset is needed to calibrate the unit this does not mean that the drift of the unit is a constant offset over the entire range of the device, a particular error on the device zero reading will result in a larger error on higher levels of gas, so it is important to follow the recommended calibration routine in fresh air even if the error at this value is low relative to the alarm levels of the device.
