Leider nichts aus der Baubranche, aber (ja, doch!) aus dem Mountain/Biking. Dort wird der Ausdruck "doubles" auf fast jeder Website fuer eines von vielen zu bewaeltigenden Hindernissen verwendet. Natuerlich kann man das nicht direkt fuer die Oberflaeche von Steinstufen ode so was verwenden, es kann sich aber wirklich nur um so etwas wie "Rippen" oder "Verwerfungen"(analog dem auf der letzten Site gezeigten Hindernis in Baumform)handeln.

fascinating question
Hi Steffen, just want to tell you I'm working on this one. I haven't found anything for doubles yet, but I wonder if 'reed' is 'reeding' = a small, convex molding. This seems possible, given that nosings are convex shapes on the ends of the treads. Reeding could be a series of small, convex shapes next to each other - Rundstabverzierung.
Any chance this could be in the right direction?

If it\'s about ornamenation, the \"doubles\" could be shorthand for \"double flutes.\" See picture below. It would make sense not to have delicate ornamenation on the treads because it would get damaged quickly. Possibly \'reeds\' and \'doubles\' are not meant to be included under \'imperfections.\'

The stone is split on natural reeds in the stone which determine its thickness

'reeds' are Spalten, but you probably know that (Eurodictautom).
In the same vein (sic), I think the doubles might refer to joints, as defined in this Glossary of Scientific and Quarry Terms:
"Joints
More or less steeply inclined fractures which cross the granite sheets and which are attributed to various stresses."
What do you think?

Komme ein bißchen spät mit der Antwort, aber die Frage ist sehr interessant.
Aus meiner beruflichen Erfahrung mit mineralischen Rohstoffen weiß ich, daß Öffnungen im Fachjargon "Schlieren" genannt werden. Geht auch aus dem Text des beigefügten Links hervor (ganz unten). Den englischen Ausdruck "open doubles" habe ich nie gehört. Kann Umgangssprache sein. Könnte mir vorstellen, daß es um Perforationen geht, die einen Kanal durch den Stein bilden und somit zwei Öffnungen bilden. Ist jedoch nur Vermutung.
