Discussion

bigedsenior Dec 19, 2004:
I think most of the activity takes place around Santa Cruz in the mountains, where there are numerous retreats.
Richard Benham Dec 19, 2004:
Actually, Sarah, I seconded Kim's comment; you thirded it.
RHELLER Dec 19, 2004:
agree that these are 3 separate attractions in Santa Cruz, not necessarily related
sarahl (X) Dec 19, 2004:
I'll second Kim's comment (I'm from Monterey), the boardwalk is right on the beach, and I do not recall any new age stuff taking place there. the city itself is still very much in the hippy era.
Richard Benham Dec 19, 2004:
I think Kim is right. I think it's a list of attractions of Santa Cruz, and the New Age thing is just the last item in that list. No wonder Kim left and went to Mexico.
Kim Metzger Dec 19, 2004:
I'm from Santa Cruz and know the Boardwalk (amusement park) well. I don't think the Boardwalk has anything to do with new age healing. The city of Santa Cruz (not the Boardwalk) attracts people interested in new age healing.

You don't need to go there....

"New Age healing" is all about "alternative", "spiritual" sorts of supposedly healing practices involving crystals and all sorts of other weird stuff. Largely hokum, of course. I understand that "New Age" comes from the so-called "Age of Aquarius" which, according to astrologers, happened thirty-odd years ago, from memory. This, of course, is entirely hokum. For some reason, California has always been a focus of this sort of crazy stuff.

agree Kim Metzger : I'd go for a six-pack, instead. http://www.selfhealingexpressions.com/home.shtml

It takes a lot of exercise to achieve a "six-pack", Kim.
agree Melanie Nassar : Very easy to explain why California is the focus. They tilted the country, and all the loose screws landed there. :-) (I actually spent 5 of my formative years in California.)

It didn't affect you, did it?
agree Kirill Semenov : "New Age" term comes from Richard Bach and his "Jonathan Livingston Seegull". That was the beginning... ;-)

Thanks. That's "Seagull". You could be right. It's too long ago for me. They say if you remember the '60s you weren't really part of it....

New Age Healing

is a term used to lump together all kinds of alternative healing methods, some of them (as already said) hokum, but a lot of them legitimate. The legitimate ones have suffered under the "New Age" blanket term, and the stereotyped opinion that only crazy Californians (truly Californian)would go for that kind of stuff.
I went to school in Santa Cruz, and the Boardwalk has a great roller coaster, and the atmosphere of days gone by, when it was quite a high-class amusement park. In my days, it was a little run down, but I'm sure has since been revitalized.

In the text, it is simply giving a list of three different attractions, not related to one another.

agree bigedsenior : your analysis is on the mark. And the Boardwalk has been modernized. Love the seafood restaurants on the pier, especially Riba's

California, in general, and Santa Cruz, in particular, attract people into who are into "new age"

I am a Californian.

Santa Cruz is not far from the famous "Big Sur" area where it all began in the '60s. - centers for eastern religions and enlightenment, etc.

kind of a state of mind :-)

in a forum all about Santa Cruz: As a headline in the local papers once asked, \"How can you miss the \'60s when they won\'t go away?\" We still have hippies: young wanna-bees, and gray-haired always-weres

agree Anna Maria Augustine (X) : Aquarius Age. Yes, alternative healing is perfectly legitimate - if you not into to get rich quick but to get well.

thanks Anna!
agree Scott Rasmussen (X) : Lord, I got my undergraduate degree at UCSC. There is nothing "new age" about the Boardwalk. It's a place for day-trippers from the Valley to get drunk and pass out!

Hi Scott - what an education :-)))))

It refers to the many practitioners and groups there dedicated to alternative healing which is self-healing and encompasses holistic health, prayer, yoga, homeopathic, herbal, meditative, etc.
Although, it is called new-age, there is very little new in it. Some things have been practiced for thousands of years. The Christian Science of Mary Baker Eddy, from early 20th century, relies on prayer and eschews medicine doctors and hospitals.

Self-Healing Expressions provides spiritual healing, new age gifts, guided meditation and holistic education through courses dealing with alternative healing, new age healing, holistic health and healing prayer.
