Compared to men without MPHL (male pattern hair loss), many men with the condition are more self-conscious and dissatisfied with their hair appearance, and as a result, they may experience a number of negative psychosocial effects. Despite the deleterious psychosocial impact of MPHL, a multinational European study published in 2005 found that a majority (76%) of men had never pursued any treatment for hair loss and preferred to use a variety of methods to distract attention from their condition10. Thus, one in four men with androgenetic hair loss were using hair-loss therapies or had tried them in the past but subsequently discontinued usage. However, in contrast to general population surveys, of ***greater import to physicians*** is an understanding of the needs and experiences of those men with MPHL who will or do consult them for treatment.
