「チョークコイル」は昔から使用されている「磁気式安定器」ですが、最近は「チョークコイル」を使用しない「電子式安定器」も出回っています。

蛍光灯安定器は大別すると磁気式安定器と電子安定器（電子式安定器）があります｡
1.磁気式安定器
磁気を通す鉄心に銅の巻線を巻きつけた構造のチョークコイルの電気的な特性（インダクタンス）により、ランプの放電の始動と安定した放電の維持をさせる安定器です。電気的にはリアクターあるいはトランスの機能をしているとも考えられます。磁気回路部品を使っているので、磁気式安定器（磁気回路式安定器）と言います。http://www.jelma.or.jp/bulb/pdf/guide_ant_03.pdf
