Canister Testing Procedures
Initially, each canister was evaluated for EPA BWC. According to procedure, 50% butane was loaded onto each canister at a rate of 15 g/hr and then purged for 300 bed volumes with 22.7 lpm air. Each canister was cycled using this procedure for a minimum of six cycles or until the BWC was constant. The EPA BWC for each canister was the average of the last two load and purge cycles and includes the 2 grams of breakthrough.
Following this, each canister was cycled with gasoline to determine the Gasoline Working Capacity (GWC) according to MeadWestvaco’s procedure. Air was bubbled through 9.0 RVP gasoline heated to 38°C to generate a 40 g/h of vapor load to each canister at 50% hydrocarbon concentration. Each canister was loaded to 5000 ppm breakthrough (as measured by an FID) and then purged with 300 bed volumes of dry air at 22.7 lpm.

■Breakthrough Concentration: the contaminant concentration, above which the sorbent is considered to be performing inadequately. Breakthrough concentration indicates the agent has broken through the sorbent, which is no longer giving the intended protection. This parameter is a function of loading history, relative humidity, and other factors.
■Breakthrough Time: the elapsed time between the initial contact of the toxic agent at a reported challenge concentration on the upstream surface of the sorbent bed, and the breakthrough concentration on the downstream side of the sorbent bed
