French term
mandat
French to English
Bus/Financial
Business/Commerce (general)
Before anyone says anything, yes, I know this term has been asked a number of times here before, but it seems that the translation varies across a number of situations. Does it really mean "mandate"? Thanks in advance.
Context (in a business letter):

Audit engagement
An organization's financial statements are a reference of choice for external users who are required to make decisions. Abstract- Audit engagement contracts must be individually written for specific clients and auditing situations. The areas to consider in writing an audit engagement letter include: arbitration clauses; expectation gap standards, wherein an audit is not a guarantee of the accuracy of financial statements; and clear identification of the time to which the audit applies as separate and distinct.

contract
Mandat, as you state, is one of those words that is difficult to translate, depends totally on context.
Contract would be a safe option I think.
Translates as "proxy powers" and "power of attorney" in other situations.
