divers

français vers anglais Affaires / Finance Ressources humaines
Translating a Belgian salary form (no. 281.20) for an employee, with various salary information. One section is “situation de famille” (“family status”), which is broken down into “conjoint”, “enfants”, “autres” and “divers”. Not sure what “divers” is referring to here. Have not managed to find an English version of this form.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (4): Adrian MM., Jennifer Levey, Julie Barber, AllegroTrans

Non-PRO (3): Lara Barnett, Rob Grayson, Jennifer White

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Scott de Lesseps (asker) Oct 27, 2021:
Thanks, Julie I agree with your comment. Yes, translating Belgian texts can sometimes be a bit tricky.
Conor McAuley Oct 27, 2021:
I've translated Belgian French from time to time, but never really "bureaucratic" language beyond things like criminal record reports and company registration documents. I'll keep what you said in mind, thanks.

Here, perhaps the compromise solution is to do a straight translation and add a translator's note with info from Samuël and Adrian's posts.
Julie Barber Oct 27, 2021:
I was making the point for Scott's overall document, but honestly even really simple words in Belgian work docs can be very specific.
Conor McAuley Oct 27, 2021:
I see completely what you mean, Julie, a bit like defined terms in contracts, but I don't think that this is the case here, because the word is so "ordinary".

The example I wanted to highlight was French income tax return forms. The form itself might be five or six pages long, but the accompanying explanatory notes might run to 20 or more pages. (In the days before online returns, of course.)
Now, if you're translating the form, you won't refer to the notes unless something unusual comes up.
Basically for an item on the form, you translate that item, not a summary of what the explanatory note for it says, which is what Adrian is more or less doing in his answer.

With the proviso that you're doing a "straight" translation and not an explanatory translation for whatever peculiar reason.
Julie Barber Oct 27, 2021:
I find that I have to be very careful with Belgian work documents. Terms that can appear simple, can in fact be used to mean something very specific and can fall under their employment laws. I'm not saying that's the case for your term, but it's definitely a point to keep in mind.
Conor McAuley Oct 27, 2021:
"Autres" is "Other" and "Divers" is "Miscellaneous".
Scott de Lesseps (asker) Oct 26, 2021:
Many thanks, Samuel!
Jennifer Levey Oct 26, 2021:
@Asker Surely the real question here is not: ‘What is the/a translation of divers?'
The question is: ‘How do I make an appropriate distinction between autres and divers?
Scott de Lesseps (asker) Oct 26, 2021:
Additional info Sorry, forgot to mention that under each sub-category I mentioned for "situation de famille", there are numbers underneath. There is a "0" underneath "divers".

Thanks, Conor. I was considering this, but I'm not sure how that would fit here. I forgot to mention (sorry!) that under each sub-category I mentioned for "situation de famille", there are numbers underneath. There is a "0" underneath "divers".

Samuël B. beat me to the weblink.

Note: sundry or diversified rather than 'gender-diverse'. In English legal drafting, *divers* of the non-footballing and no-swimming variety is an alternative spelling to diverse.
