French term

dynamique

French to English Medical Medical (general) Journal article
Hi,
I am currently translation an article on current and future trends of total knee arthroplasties. The author uses the word "dynamique" a lot in this manuscript and I am not sure how to translate it. For instance:
"Nous proposons d'étudier la dynamique des PTG sur la base des des données nationales, pour ...."
or
"Notre hypothèse est qu'il existe une dynamique à la hausse différente pour chaque sexe et catégorie d'âge"

Could "dynamique" in these instances mean "momentum" or "trends"?

Thanks
Joanna

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions! They are all correct, and as Phil stated I will need to find the appropriate one for each case.

Background

so maybe "trend towards" in your first instance

I see the last sentence in French has been translated as

Hypothesis

In France, the number of TKA procedures is rising in both males and females but the pace of the increases differs between sexes.

agree philgoddard : Joanna will have to find a different translation each time, because "dynamics" is not a word that you can keep repeating.

pattern

Yes, it seems limp in comparison to the dynamism (hate the word, but hey, Obama used it) of the French, and it will depend on what they actually mean by la dynamique des PTG, but consider that you can have a 'growth pattern' or different growth patterns for different ages and genders.

You could even combine it with 'trends', as here:

"This series of releases for the CJRR annual report highlights trends and patterns in hip and knee replacements in Canada over time"

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : Another of many possibilities but, as I mentioned, you have to find lots of different ways to say it.

And that, my dear friend, is the very art of (human) translation itself.

Also, there's an NHS web page called Dynamic Health. It gives some constructive advice and guidance on self help to strengthen the knee joint with exercise.
It instructs a visit to the doctor if pain and problems persist.

Peer comment(s):

neutral liz askew : you need to look at the meaning in French and French descriptions of its meaning, and find out how this can be translated into English.
