German term

Fehlerstromschutzstecker

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng Koordinatenmessmaschinen

Johannes Gleim Jan 18, 2011:
You know it, Ok but why the asker selected "Electrrical socket" including the typing error?
The device in question may be connected to a supply cord or may have integrated a socket, too, but this was not mentioned by the asker. Therefore I would not propose "socket" or "adapter".
Kim Metzger Jan 18, 2011:
Yes, we know that.
Johannes Gleim Jan 18, 2011:
Stecker = plug and not socket

EN plug
connector attached to a cable
DE Stecker
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...

EN socket
connector attached to an apparatus, or to a constructional element or alike
DE Steckdose

Electrrical socket with ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)

This is what they're called in America.
In GB probably electical socket with RCCB.
In contrast to a device installed in the house distribution box (the ckalssic GFCI or RCCB), these can be installed easilyat a later time to prevent dangerous shocks in places like the bathroom with wet floor.

Andrew's right, they are also installed in plugs - so that is what you need here.

neutral Lancashireman : Socket (Steckdose) or plug (Stecker)? // If Kim's picture is the real thing, it seems to be a bit of both, i.e. an adapter.

Personal protection plug and adapter

The personal protection plugs and adapters provide portable protection equipment for increasing the protection level according to DIN VDE 0661. The devices have a rated difference current of ≤30 mA and thus provide additional protection even with direct contact of voltage-conducting parts as well as required fire protection in the sense of DIN VDE 0100 Part 410. Similar to the RCCB, the DIperfekt devices also function on the differential current principle.

Home Page: What is GFCI plug?

Required by the NFPA since 2008, a GFCI plug could save your life some day!

Many electrocutions can be prevented by GFCI circuitry in the home or building.

GFCI Stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter - a very quick-responding device that cuts off the flow of electricity under certain abnormal circumstances.

This article explains GFCI plugs and their underlying technology, conveying the essential information any one involved with house and building wiring and electrical circuitry and equipment should know, and more.
http://gfciplug.com/

AVAILABILITY OF GFCIs
Three common types of ground fault circuit interrupters are available for home use:

* RECEPTACLE TYPE

This type of GFCI is used in place of the standard duplex receptacle found throughout the house It fits into the standard outlet box and protects you against "ground faults' whenever an electrical product is plugged into the outlet Most receptacle-type GFCls can be installed so that they also protect other electri-cal outlets further "down stream" in the branch circuit.

* CIRCUIT BREAKER TYPE

In homes equipped with circuit breakers rather than fuses, a circuit breaker GFCI may be installed in a panel box to give protection to selected circuits The circuit breaker GFCI serves a dual purpose - not only will it shut off electricity in the event of a "ground-fault," but it will also trip when a short circuit or an ov.er-load occurs Protection covers the wiring and each outlet, lighting fixture, heater, etc served by the branch circuit protected by the GFCI in the panel box.

* PORTABLE TYPE

Where permanent GFCls are not practical, portable GFCls may be used One type contains the GFCI circuitry in a plastic encio-sure with plug blades in the back and receptacle slots in the f rant. It can be plugged into a receptacle, then, the electrical product is plugged into the GFCI. Another type of portable GFCI is an extension cord combined with a GFCI. It adds flexibility in using receptacles that are not protected by GFCls.

And last, but not least, some photos of GFCI plugs (not GFCI receptables or sockets)

RCD Safety Plug

RCD Safety Plug
Protect yourself from electric shock with the RCD Safety Plug. For use with all electrical appliances in and around the house. Simply plug the safety plug into the socket and then plug your appliance into the RCD safety plug.
http://shortify.com/11732

What is an RCD safety plug?
This JCB RCD PLUG will continuously monitor the power supply to an electrical appliance and cut off the supply within 40 milliseconds if an earth current fault is detected. This is fast enough to prevent a fatal electrical shock. Electrical appliances can become dangerous if the wiring becomes loose, if they or their power cords become damaged or if they get wet. Electrocution is also possible if fingers, wet hair or other conductive bodies enter the appliance. In all these cases your JCB RCD PLUG will instantly cut off the electricity before the user receives a potentially fatal electric shock.
