German term

Repräsentationsschluss

German to English Science Mathematics & Statistics Inferential statistics
I would like a workable definition for the above word, as used in the following context:

"Ausgehend von einem Repräsentationsschluss, also von einem Schluss von dem Schätzwert auf den Grundgesamtheitsparameter, ist der aus einer Stichprobe ermittelte Schätzwert nur eine Schätzung des Mittelwertes µ der Grundgesamtheit, d.h. daß bei verschiedenen Stichproben die ermittelten Schätzwerte im allgemeinen variieren."

I am broadly familiar with the subject area here but would like a precise rendering of "Repräsentationsschluss" here.

Web links and "educated guesses" are welcome, but given the nature of the text, I really need someone who is experienced in this kind of translation.

I have already spent quite a while browsing through Minitab to get the basic background to the subject :=)

Many thanks for the suggestions! They proved very useful in providing an acceptable translation -- many thanks!

Without the additional context, my first guess would be that is refers to an inference based on a statistical (or graphic?) representation of the data, but since they are also weighing it against other measurements, I would agree with the above. The wikipedia article on statistical inference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_inference
says that the conclusion drawn is a stastical proposition, among which they also list "confidence interval" which usually helps determine a "confidence level." You may also want to scroll down to "Frequentist inference," which is based on sampling, and also has "confidence interval" as a subtype. Wikipedia also describes "confidence interval" (on its on page) as "In statistics, a confidence interval (CI) is a particular kind of interval estimate of a population parameter."
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confidence_interval) Anyway, I hope this helps.

I would look along the lines of "representativeness" which is closely linked to the notion of "strength/quality of statistical inference". I have seen Repräsentationsschluss translated simply as "statistical inference" but I don't think this is sufficient here.
