Mate My experience of Norwegian merchant marine is that Styrmann is the title for a deck officer subordinate to the Captain/Master. The traditional English title is Mate, but this seems to be being replaced by "Officer" as in First or Chief Officer, Second Officer, particularly in passenger ships.
Rormann is Helmsman, sometimes Helm.

Yes, that’s wrong Overstyrmann is the first officer/mate who runs the ship under the captain, and the styrmann is the second officer/mate who is in charge of navigation. The helmsman steers the ship etc.

styrmannen Thanks for the info.
But my uncertainty is that I usually translate styrmannen to "helmsman." Is that wrong? (I don't know how to drive/pilot a ship myself.)
