Discussion

felidaevampire Feb 1, 2009:
I just thought it might better to give them different names, or an ignorant (on the subject) reader may think we are talking about the same person. And what if the text mentions both? Like "...a madrinha e a rainha da bateria estavam lindas..." Would you translate both as "queen"? THAT is confusing... I'll play like my friend Galileu now. :) :) :)
R. Alex Jenkins Feb 1, 2009:
There can only be one 'Queen', but there many beautiful ladies who compete for this position, naturally. It's a privileged role. Sub-roles have therefore been created, such as the 'madrinha' who is a second or alternative queen, to cater for this demand. A 'madrinha' is certainly a different person, yes, but she does NOT play a different or separate role to the queen, as has been suggested - and that is the main point, the distinction. She is simply another, duplicate queen. Do you see the confusion felidaevampire? You cannot have two queens, so you have to give ladies who want to dance in front of the drum unit various other names... Sorry, it's confusing.

Don't believe in everything you read! Maybe Noel Rosa should have added "IMHO" in the end... "Queen" for "madrinha"? Are you sure? Drum section is nice, though. (Cheers, Richard!) Congrats on your choice, anyway. Best wishes! :) :) :)

Yes, Richard, I'm aware they were (at least) different roles. (I'm not fond of samba, so I wouldn't know what it's like today.) Since the asker has posted they are the same, though, I thought it a good idea to say something about it. I'm only trying to help him choose an appropriate answer. OK, Marco? :) :) :)
R. Alex Jenkins Feb 1, 2009:
Yes, there are definitely different roles, such as the 'drum muse' and the 'drum princess', for example, but these are essentially derivatives of the true queen, as in 'supporting casts' in a movie, let's say. So many people have wanted to be the leading Queen that these secondary roles have been created over time to cater for these people, essentially watering down the true role of the queen itself. The essential role is the 'queen'. Actually, I've even seen the 'Rei da Bateria' (king), but that's just getting silly...read the article posted, 'felidaevampire', by Marco in his comments to me...

Are you sure they are the same??? As far as I know, some "Samba Schools" have both! One "madrinha" AND one "rainha". At least on last year's Carnaval they did... :)
marco lessa (X) (asker) Jan 31, 2009:
Rainha/Madrinha de Bateria They are the same.

the drum section queen

I think you could also say:
The "RAINHA DE BATERIA" - it's the same thing.

This is what 'madrinha' really means in this context of your text - the drum section queen / goddess / stunner etc...

Take a look at this (yes it's great for all us boys - sorry ladies)

Battery is the percussion section of an orchestra.

agree Paula Strahm : I see your point. So what do you think about "the queen of the drum wing"? "Unit" would fit well, too. Anyway - good suggestion.

Thanks a lot :) I agree to an extent, but I'm not sure you could safely remove 'section', otherwise it may appear that she actually plays the drums, when she obviously does not. // sure...'wing' is good. 'Unit', also.
agree Gustavo Silva : "drum queen" (just search Google for images and you will see plenty of them) :-)

That's a very good suggestion. I'll have another look on Google for 'drum queen' purely in the name of research, of course :)))
agree Amy Duncan (X) : It was life-altering! Being in the middle of nearly 500 other drummers, then the fireworks go off, the repinique makes the call, and you're OFF! Whew!

...and it's so well organised, that's the most amazing thing - the amount of sheer work and organisation involved. // Brilliant - what an experience. Never done that! The intensity of the noise must be incredible.
