Prezados Colegas,

Right now, it’s estimated that 25-40 percent of all fresh produce harvested will not **reach consumers’ tables**, due to spoilage and mishandling that occurs during distribution

Portuguese term (edited):
chegam à mesa do consumidor, provocando riscos para a saúde pública.
end up being served as food, thus creating a public health risk.
This would represent a natural rendering in English. From the context, it would be evident that the "food" is being served to human beings, rather than animals or plants.

If you really prefer a more literal rendering (which also would sound natural in English), it could be something along the lines of:
end up being offered for human consumption, thus creating a public health risk

Thank you. The problem with "dinner table" is that such animal products could be served for breakfast, lunch, and snacks as well. Just saying.

wind up on the dinner table
e.g.,
Just consider federally subsidized corn production in the United States. The resulting produce doesn't just wind up on the dinner table covered in butter; it feeds livestock, enters the fuel tank in the form of ethanol and becomes high-fructose corn syrup.

We would have laws to protect them as we have laws to protect pets and zoo animals.
But, she says, few consumers have any idea of how animals that eventually wind up on the dinner table are treated while alive.

Raccoons, squirrels, and opossums also fall into this category to a certain degree, and rarely wind up on the dinner table, save for in the most backwoods of areas.
