Portuguese term

Alta taxa de retirada

Portuguese to English Other Medical: Health Care Clinical Trials
This is the report on a clinical trial that I am translating and the sentence is:
....incluindo adultos idosos e com uma alta taxa de retirada.

A little puzzled as they are probably retired folk, in which case what else are they.

A high rate of ????? withdrawal symptoms.
Would appreciate some suggestions.

Discussion

canaria Apr 20, 2005:
dropout rate is not at all casual - it's an accepted term - look for clinical trials dropout rate on google
Deborah do Carmo Apr 19, 2005:
Hi Sue, almost convinced you chose the right term - drop-out is too casual, although that's the idea
Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
No, Irina, there isn't unfortunately. But I am going to go for withdrawal and hope for the best.
Irina Dicovsky - MD (X) Apr 19, 2005:
Not really. Is there data available on how many patients started the trial and how many complied until it was closed?
Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
Yes, I think drop-out rate could be the solution. However, the whole sentence reads:"Encontramos um ECR comparando 4 regimes diferentes de quimioterapia. Um segundo ECR comparando o CHOP with m-BACOD, incluindo adultos idosos e com uma alta taxa de RETIRADA, no encontrou diferena significativa na mortalidade em 4 ou 5,3 anos." Phew ......... does this throw more light on this gloomy topic?

high clearance rate

This could be a number of things, among which RETIREMENT is probably not an option (false cognate).

It could simply mean "high wages" (income), referring to the socioeconomic status of the test population;

Another idea: clearance rate for some drug;

Yet another one: a high rate of the study population withdraws from taking a given medicine;

high drop out rate

depends on the rest of the sentence
Peer comment(s):

agree Irina Dicovsky - MD (X) : I agree it does depend on the rest of the sentence and that it is associated to low compliance.

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : This is the same thing as "withdrawal rate" ("dropout" without a hyphen).
