Departamento de Extranjería y Migración

español al inglés Jurídico/Patentes Gobierno / Política
Would this be most succinctly expressed as, simply, "Immigration Department"? I can't find the name of this office in English. Other options seem awkward and wordy. Thanks.

@Marouchka - I agree. US is target here.

thought the "cl" might have been Colombia

David Hollywood Jul 21, 2021:
Which country is this from?
AllegroTrans Jul 21, 2021:
And if it was translated for the USA but the target reader in the USA was from India? or New Zealand?
Names like these imo should not be localised
Marouchka Heijnen Jul 21, 2021:
I agree with Laura but I think you need to keep in mind the target language. Home Office would be good for UK English, but for the US I would translate it as Department of Immigration or Immigration Services

question is...is it Ministry or Department? ...looks like "Department" would do...
Note from asker:
Yes, I prefer "Department".

neutral philgoddard : Immigration is one form of migration, so this doesn't work.

Home Office

The Home Office is the lead government department for immigration and passports, drugs policy, crime, fire, counter-terrorism and police.
Note from asker:
Home Office could be a good option for the UK. In the US, this wouldn't make sense within this context.
Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : The Home Office is in GB but this entity is in a SP-spkg jurisdiction. An EN-speaker outside the UK would most probably not even understand your "translation"; wrong method

Many offices of this kind have their website in other languages...but this one is only in Spanish, hence my question. If Chile had the website in English other languages, like many other countries do, I would obviosuly use the term they use.

Agreed, I don't use the word "aliens" because it's now a very politically incorrect term in the U.S.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joss Heywood : Depends on the target audience - in EN-UK, "aliens" come from outer space

Not really. See details of the UK Aliens Act of 1905 I have posted above.
neutral AllegroTrans : Not sure if they have aliens in Chile - most jurisdictions have phased out the term (ready for when visitors from space truly arrive?)

Not in the US - see my postings above.
agree philgoddard : My official status in the US is "legally resident alien". It's not politically incorrect at all.

Thanks Phil! We are becoming excessively wary of "political incorrectness"
